Joint Biz Partnership Grant Guide & Application Form

Biz Partnership Grant Presentation

The Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry and support of Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry are implementing a UNDP-ACT funded project entitled Economic Interdependence that aims to promote economic interdependence between the Greek-Cypriot and the Turkish-Cypriot communities enabling the two business communities to enhance their business and economic relations.

The Economic Interdependence project commenced in April 2009 and will end in July 2011. The project will capitalize on all relevant surveys that have been conducted to date but will also significantly build on them and undertake to implement a range of new activities/schemes in order to achieve its objectives. In this direction there will be bi-communal business meetings, grant schemes for the establishment of joint partnerships between the two communities, joint Chamber events for informing interested parties on the Green Line Trade, business language courses as well as the compilation of a business directory.

The business directory will gather the contact details of businesses in both communities interested to cooperate with their counterparts in the other community. For this reason, if you are interested to buy, sell and/or form another kind of business partnership with a business in the Greek-Cypriot community you are kindly requested to provide your relevant interest and company details in the attached form. If you wish not to reveal your details, then any information you provide will be treated in strict confidence and will not be published anywhere; we will simply keep it in our internal records in full confidence so that we can inform you accordingly if an opportunity arises in your field of interest. Please make sure you mark accordingly the appropriate box in the attached document.

Additionally, please bear in mind that only products wholly obtained in Cyprus or that have undergone their last, substantial, economically justified processing or working in Cyprus can be traded across the Green Line, and that the movement of live animals and animal products across the line is prohibited (with the exceptions of fresh fish and honey). For more information on the Green Line Trade you may contact Ms Oya Barn at the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce (KTTO), tel. 2283760, e-mail: oyabarcin@ktto.net

All interested parties must complete and return the attached form to the KTTO, c/o Mr Umut Vehit, fax. 2283089, e-mail: uvehit@ktto.net  by 30 October 2009 until the end of office hours at the very latest.

For any enquiries on the business directory or for more information on the project in general please contact Mr. Umut Vehit at the KTTO (tel: 2283760).

We thank you in advance for your co-operation.

                                                            JOINT STATEMENT

On the occasion of the forthcoming opening of negotiations on economic issues between the leaders of the two communities of Cyprus, we, the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, encourage them to continue their efforts towards finding a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

We believe that a fair and lasting settlement will transform the island into an island of prosperity within the EU and make it an important business center in this region with access to all neighboring countries. This will have a positive impact for Turkish-Greek relations and contribute to the development of a positive political and economic environment in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Solution of this long-lasting problem will bring the people of Cyprus closer together and will increase the economic potential of the island as a whole. In addition, the positive synergies that will be created will increase Cyprus chances of countering the global economic crisis and transforming it into a window of opportunity.

It is an undeniable fact that both communities are bound to live together on the same island. We must learn from the bitter experiences of the past and establish our common future together. However, the further we delay the solution, the harder it will be to realize this goal. Therefore we urge both leaders to continue working together and reach an agreement as soon as possible.

We also call on all other actors and the international community to support the two leaders and to contribute to the process in a positive way.

The two Chambers believe that economic convergence and sustainable economic development are essential ingredients of a lasting solution and increased competitiveness of the island as a whole. Therefore we invite and encourage the business people of the two communities to establish and improve business links between them. The benefits of doing business together can prove a win-win situation for both communities.

As a manifestation of their close cooperation, the two Chambers have submitted a common project on Interdependence to UNDP-ACT. The aim of this project is to reinforce, foster and nurture the economic interdependence between the two communities.

This project has recently been approved by UNDP-ACT and, by signing it today, the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce are showing their commitment to work closely to make it a success.
