The Turkish Cypriot producers must be included in the PDO registration of the Hellim/Halloumi

The Turkish Cypriot Hellim producers are asking for their rights to be ensured in the application lodged by the Greek Cypriot Ministry of Agriculture to the European Commission on the 17th July 2014, to register Hellim/Halloumi as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) in the EU.

The application, made under EU Council Regulation (EC) No 1151/2012, in its current form unfairly excludes the Turkish Cypriot Hellim producers, as it does not make any reference to a competent authority and/or control body responsible for carrying out the required official controls in North Cyprus. The only competent authority designated in the application is the Greek Cypriot Ministry of Agriculture which does not have jurisdiction in North Cyprus, thus cannot effectively carry out the necessary controls in the North to verify the compliance of the production in accordance with the PDO specification.
